Do you want to go to heaven when you die?

According to the Bible, heaven is the place where God lives.

The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’s throne is in heaven… Psalm 11:4

The Bible also speaks of hell as being a real place which was created for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41).  Hell is the place where the souls of people go, who have died without receiving God’s forgiveness for their sins.  Jesus Christ said if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins (John 8:24).

Jesus Christ referred to hell as a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42). If you are able to understand the difference between right and wrong, you will be held accountable for your actions.

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Matthew 12:36

The problem is that none of us are good enough to meet the standard of perfection that the holy God of the Bible requires.  From God’s viewpoint, [t]here is none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10).  Just breaking one of God’s laws is in his sight, as if all of them had been broken:

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

We are not able to work our way to heaven with good deeds either.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isaiah 64:6

So how do you get to heaven?

The key to this is having your sins forgiven.  It took Jesus Christ (God’s Son), coming down to earth as a man to die on a cross to provide the way to heaven.

Because he was (and is) God, Jesus committed no sin and so fulfilled the law, which we could not do.

For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. Hebrews 7:26

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Romans 10:4

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Being sinless, Christ’s blood was holy and pure.  His blood was shed when he was on the cross, and this provided redemption: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14).

When he died on the cross, Jesus gave himself for our sins (Galatians 1:4) and took them away (1 John 3:5). This was one sacrifice for sins for ever (Hebrews 10:12) that offered reconciliation between God and any person.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Who gave himself a ransom for all… 1 Timothy 2:5, 6

After he died, Jesus was buried (which confirmed that he had died). He was not overcome by death however and rose from the dead on the third day. Only God could allow himself to die, then be raised from the dead, never to die again. There were over 500 eye witnesses of Jesus after he rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Responding in faith:

Rather than rely on your own works to get you to heaven, have faith in Christ’s finished work for you.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8, 9

If you recognise that you are a sinner in the sight of the holy God of the Bible and want to be reconciled to him, then receive the gospel.

The gospel is that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4

Call out to God from your heart for forgiveness, trusting only in Christ’s sacrifice to save you from hell.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9

An example of a prayer that you may wish to pray to call out to God is as follows:

Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and unless you save me, I am lost forever.  I believe that you died on the cross to take away my sins and that you rose from the dead.  Please forgive me for all my sins and save me.  Help me to live for you in everything I do from now on.

When should you do this?  The Bible says now.

[B]ehold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2

When you have called out to God truly from your heart, he will save you and you will go to heaven when you die.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13

At the moment you get saved, God will give you a brand new spiritual life:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
